The Seven Mirrors of the Artists Soul, the seven mirrors philosophy is said to have come from the Essene texts of the 12th century and these writings described the seven important relationships to self. This philosophy has been often translated into the Seven Mirrors of the Soul, the mirror as a metaphor for life.
Labauvie has reinvented the seven mirrors as The Seven Mirrors of the Artist's Soul referring to what he sees as important to his life as an artist: Discovering, Making, Traveling, Learning, Singing, Building and Growing.
The choice of veneer represents a natural element to respond to; Woodcut is Labauvie's favorite print medium as it permits him to identify forms and define environments for the viewer as in his sculpture. The use of silver relates to the manner that mirrors are fabricated, which creates the best way to use light to reflect one's image.
